It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to actually listen to anything by the Japanese noise god Merzbow. I feel like, for the most part, once you’ve heard his work you’ve heard it. The one exception has been his live collaboration with Pan Sonic, and now this new colab with Gareth Davis. Especially on the third longer piece “Inland Empire” where non-stop but closely-tuned tones form a foundation for Merzbow’s surprisingly muted electronic screams and grinds to exist as much more discreet mirco moments, each distinguishable as their own brief scenes.
